The town was originally called "Kastelli" and was renamed Panormos because of its existence, in an adjacent colony, called "Panormos" , a small church named after "St. George Panormos".

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the city has regained some of its glory, being a maritime transit center for agricultural and livestock products in the province of Mylopotamos.

Large warehouses were built there for this purpose. The city also had a primary school, a semi-gymnasium, which was founded in 1917 and operated in 1918, it was the seat of the Peace Court and the Gendarmerie substation.

Thus it became the capital of the Province of Mylopotamos.

After World War II, the town, already named Panormo, turns into a small fishing village.

New life gives way to the crossing of the new national highway (A 90 - E 75) from its outskirts and, in the 1980s, the creation of a fishing refuge.

Today it is a resort with a large and several smaller hotel units. One of the old carob processing depots has been transformed into a state-of-the-art concert hall (Harobomilos), where important cultural events take place throughout the year.
