Crete's only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km.

The width, at the point where the landing stage is built, is about 800  m.

There is a nature preserve on the Southwest of the lake.

Georgioupoli is a popular seaside resort located 38km east of Chania and 21km west of Rethymnon.

It is a small coastal town, situated in a lush valley filled with rivers and springs. Locals, apart from tourism, deal with beekeeping and agriculture.
